MFT 2019 Card Design Superstar - Innovation Master Entry

Hello,

Today I have a very special creation to share with you all, that I created for the MFT 2019 Card Design Superstar contest under the Innovation Master category. This is my first year participating in the challenge, and my only entry :)

It took over 2 days of planning and hours and hours of long hard-working days to create this - my most time-consuming project ever! I've poured my heart and soul into this and consider it my masterpiece! :)

So, ready to see it? It is a matchbox explosion box card filled with lots of surprises and interactive elements!

Here is the first look!

Open the lid and you see this!

All that this box holds!! Scroll down to see them in detail!

Watch the video to see everything in action! :)

Innovation factors:
  1. A design combination of multiple techniques, fancy folds, and interactive elements listed below.
  2. Stretching your supplies - Used only 1 stamp set with coordinating dies - "Beary Special Birthday".
  3. Curtain effect for the sides of the explosion box
  4. Custom image created for the 'Pull Tab Slider' combining the actual bear image with gift, masking, and the other bear with balloons.
  5. Custom patterned paper created using the tiny stamps
  6. Custom matchbox drawer handles using the hat stamp
Techniques used:
  1. Coloring
  2. Die-cutting
  3. Doodling
  4. Emboss resist
  5. Heat embossing
  6. Ink blending
  7. Ink splatter
  8. Masking
  9. Mirror stamping
  10. Stamping

Fancy fold/Interactive elements:
  1. Easel Card
  2. Explosion Box
  3. Magic Slider Card
  4. Matchbox Popup Drawers
  5. Pull Tab Slider Card
  6. Shaker
  7. Spinner Card
  8. Tunnel Card

Details:
  • Main Base: The main explosion box base, lid, and matchbox drawers are made using metallic blue cardstock and black cardstock. The matchbox drawers have a handle created using the hat stamp. It is stamped, heat embossed, colored and die-cut, and attached to the drawer using foam tape.
  • Patterned Paper: Since I didn't have any patterned paper from MFT, I ended up creating my own for all the mat layers. I've stamped the tiny images from the stamp set (hats, gifts, and balloons) using Versamark ink and heat embossing in white. I then made it colorful by blending inks in a rainbow-colored order. This emboss-resist is one of my fav techniques! Also, I've added interest to the pattern by doodling some patterns on the hats using white gel pen and splattering black ink randomly.

  • Lid: For the lid of the explosion box, I've created a spinner easel card. The bear image is mirror stamped, colored, die-cut and suspended using white thread in a blue frame. The frame is created by die-cutting using the Elegant Rectangle dies. The easel stopper is a gift image stamped, heat embossed, colored and die-cut. For coloring, I've used Faber Castell watercolor pencils and a water brush. I added some interest using a white gel pen.
Spinner Easel Card

Love this cute bear! :)

  • Sides: The sides of the box are my fav and I love them!! Thank you Raji for the curtain idea :) This process took a loooot of time! I had to stamp, color, die-cut, add glossy accents and attach each little hat to black thread. There are a total of 56 hats here! 4 sides x 7 colors x 2 black backing!!
  • Center: The center portion of the base of the explosion box has a shaker, filled with blue star sequins and glitter dust.

  • Matchbox 1: I've created an easel card along with a surprise pull-tab slider. The gift box is stamped, heat embossed, colored and die-cut. I trimmed out the bear from the image. On a separate cardstock, I masked a portion of the image, stamped a part of the bear and completed the other half of the bear image using another stamp (the bear with the balloon). The sentiment is stamped and heat embossed in black. I've blended yellow ink and black splatters for the backgrounds here.

  • Matchbox 2: The second one is a tunnel card. The frames are created using the Elegant Rectangle dies and I've used the balloons, hats and gifts images. They are stamped, heat embossed, colored and die-cut.

  • Matchbox 3: Here is a magic slider card. I've used the bear with a cake image for this one. The magic reveals a colorful version along with a party hat :) The backgrounds are made using masking and ink blending in blue and green. I also misted with water for some more effect.

  • Matchbox 4: A simple matchbox popup card. The bear with the cake is perfect for this technique as it needs some rest :) And the sentiment to go along with it!

All the inner drawers inside the matchboxes!

  17. Me again! I just reread your post and watched the video again and am still in awe! Every year I create an interactive card for my lovely niece who is always so appreciative. Her birthday is in April so if you don't mind, I would like to attempt to create your amazing little work of art. I have my work cut out for me since I am not as creative as you but I figure I have six months to work on it. Any tips or suggestions before I begin? Thank you.

    1. Thanks a lot again :) Please feel free to try it out and share your work, I would love to see! No specific tips, but I would suggest to keep the measurements based on the stamp/die you are planning to use. I generally go with the flow in designing, but this one had to be measured properly before I started! And decide on the techniques and which stamps would suit that technique.
